Purpose
Scopic Labs is an Amsterdam-based immersive media studio focused on using VR to address pressing societal issues. With a mission to foster empathy, accountability, and deeper understanding through technology and storytelling, the studio partners with public institutions, researchers, and advocacy groups to create VR experiences that go beyond narrative art and into the realm of behavioral impact. Their work is built on a foundation of socially conscious design and aims to bridge complex subjects like bias, trauma, and displacement with emotionally resonant immersive experiences.
Where We See Impact
Scopic Labs has developed impactful VR simulations for institutions such as the Dutch Police and the University of Twente. Their project "VR-Surveillance" simulates scenarios of racial profiling and has been adopted as part of active police training programs in the Netherlands and Belgium. It won the Europol Innovation Award and received a Webby Award nomination for its public service value. Another project, "Meet the Soldier," brings audiences into the lived experience of a military servicemember, and was nominated for a Gouden Kalf (Dutch Academy Award). Their VR short "Shelter" addresses the emotional landscape of displacement and is being used by NGOs and educational groups to raise awareness around refugee experiences. Unlike XR companies focused on entertainment or commercial branding, Scopic Labs is committed to public impact, using immersive tools to shift perceptions, drive institutional learning, and build emotional intelligence around difficult topics.
