Purpose

Proto Hologram is a holographic communications platform that enables lifelike, interactive presence between people across distances. The system uses specialized display boxes (ranging from tabletop to life-sized units) that project realistic 3D video of a person, creating the illusion they are physically present in the room. Unlike traditional video calls, Proto creates a more immersive and authentic connection by showing the full body of the person in three-dimensional space, complete with shadows and reflections that trick the brain into perceiving actual presence. This technology allows for meaningful human connection across distances for healthcare, education, business, and family communication.

Where We See Impact

Proto Hologram has demonstrated significant impact in healthcare access, particularly for patients in rural areas who would otherwise need to travel long distances for specialist consultations. In West Tennessee, cancer specialists now use Proto to consult with patients in remote clinics, providing critical care without requiring vulnerable patients to travel. Medical professionals report that the life-sized, three-dimensional presence creates a more immersive and effective patient visit compared to traditional telehealth formats. Beyond healthcare, Proto has been used in educational settings where studies show students experience a strong sense of co-presence with hologram instructors, believing them to be authentically "in the room" and maintaining better attention than with traditional video formats.

Accessing This Experience

Proto offers several hardware options, including the life-sized "Epic" and the tabletop 21.5-inch display. The technology can be accessed through institutional partnerships, as most current deployments are in healthcare facilities, universities, and corporate settings. The company primarily serves business clients including major corporations, healthcare systems, and educational institutions, though they have indicated plans to develop more affordable consumer versions for home use in the future. Proto works with both pre-recorded and live video content, and any 4K camera (including smartphones) can serve as a video source. While Proto-to-Proto direct communication is not yet supported (requiring an additional camera), the platform continues to evolve with expanding capabilities and accessibility options.
